I was looking forward to connecting in-person with colleagues, SWE connections, and like-minded peers at WE20 as I did in previous years beginning when I was a collegiate member. Then my in-person planning changed and I determined that there are benefits from attending WE20 virtually while on a budget.
As we continue to plan in the new normal of virtual presence, the Society has decided to host WE20 completely virtual due to COVID-19. We may not have the same benefits as in-person, but virtually we will have similar benefits from the location of our choice. A few of the highlight events from my perspective are as follows:
- Flexibility: The conference is virtual, therefore, I will be able to attend sessions virtually from the comfort of the location of my choice. Right now, I am planning to spend some time at my at-home desk, kitchen table drinking coffee, and likely in Colorado while on vacation. I thought I was going to be in New Orleans, Louisiana for conference and now I have the opportunity to make the location custom. Many of the sessions will also be recorded, therefore, I will be able to attend sessions at my leisure. - I am most excited to be able to watch sessions where I may be double-booked.
- Connection: While conference may be virtual, the planning committee has scheduled virtual lounges and networking suites to aid in the facilitation of an environment that fosters connection. There will be live events as well, that will allow for attendees to engage in various capacities with the audience, speaker, and host. Did you know that the career fair is going to be virtual! - Closer to the event, attendees will be able to allow recruiters to know that they are open to networking and interviewing.
- Celebration: When I leave the conference annually, I am recharged with the motivation to continue to grow professionally, inspire future generations, and pay it forward with SWE. Ways that I see WE20 will reinvigorate me is through the four keynote speakers scheduled. I expect to be inspired by the award ceremony for the WE20 award recipients. Figuring out professional growth through conference was simpler for me to determine with the many workshops scheduled.
These are only three general benefits that I concluded when determining to register for the virtual SWE WE20 conference. I also took into account how to afford the conference financially, including registering to volunteer. If you are interested, as I hope you are,to learn more about WE20, including the schedule of events follow this hyperlink. I look forward to connecting virtually November 2 -13.
