I joined the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) in November 2003 as an undergraduate student at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez (UPRM). My immediate involvement with the collegiate section got me elected as secretary in FY05. When I was elected as the FY06 President of the UPRM collegiate section I reached out to the Collegiate Leadership Coaching Committee (CLCC) for resources that could aid us in overcoming the challenges I had seen during my year as Secretary. The committee at the time was looking to have a member in Puerto Rico, and I was offered to serve as coach of both my section and the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico (PUPR) collegiate section. During my time on the CLCC, I presented the Fund Development session at the 2006 Region D Conference at the University of Central Florida. I also presented four sessions at the 2008 Region D Conference at the University of Miami: Managing Effective Meetings, SWE Officer Training, Building Membership, and Fund Development. In FY08, I was selected to be the Region D Team Lead of the CLCC, where I led the team of leadership coaches in 7 states and territories located in the southeast of the United States and the Caribbean. I also created a connection with the PUPR collegiate section as their leadership coach, and they elected me as their counselor in FY08.I joined the SWE New England Shoreline Section (NESS) in 2008. During my time at NESS, I founded the NESS Facebook page and served as its administrator until I moved back to Puerto Rico in 2010. I returned to Puerto Rico and became the Puerto Rico section President for years FY11 and FY12. I also served as SWE UPRM counselor from years FY12 through FY15. In FY16 the Multicultural Committee, of which I was a member, spun off into today’s Diversity and Inclusion Affinity Groups (AGs). I was elected Co-Chair of the Latinos AG for FY18 and FY19. In FY20, I took the role of Professional Development Lead of the Latinos AG. My greatest accomplishment in this role has been the establishment of a cross-AG diversity and inclusion book club. The book club kicked off at WE19 and has had a participation of 68 members through meetups, conference calls, and Facebook exchanges. I rejoined the leadership coaching committee (LCC) in FY18. Since that time, I've provided coaching and consulting to 11 sections, reaching over 200 SWE members across multiple states and territories. As part of the LCC, I presented the session entitled Building Diverse and Inclusive Teams at WELocal St. Louis in FY19. I also presented sessions at the Women in STEM Conference at the University of Pittsburgh in FY19 titled Hit the Ground Running, Effective Communication, and Managing Effective Meetings. I’ve coordinated and presented the following panels at SWE annual conferences: Engineering Working Moms in 2017: Where is My Village, and Affinity Groups Panel at WE17, Driving Innovation Through Diversity at WE18, and Diversity and Inclusion in the Latinx Community at WE19.
